How is soap and shampoo different?

Soap is a surfactant generally made from lye and potash. Modern soaps are better classified as detergents which utilize different products to obtain the same results without the harshness of soap.

Shampoo is a synthetic soap. It works by stripping ';sebum'; from the hair (which is the oil that hair follicles produce).

Shampoo is a detergent, chemically an ionic surfactant. It works by increasing surface tension and floating dirt off.

Soap is animal-based, ie tallow, and has no detergent.
